China Bound with NC State University Study Abroad Students!

With great eagerness, we’re headed for three cities in China (Shanghai, Suzhou, and Beijing) as part of the NC State University College of Education’s Study Abroad Course, “Exploring Chinese Culture and Education.” As part of our orientation, yesterday we had a great class where the students read and discussed Age of Ambition: Chasing Fortune, Truth, and Faith in the New China, by award winning author Evan Osnos. We also experienced authentic Chinese cuisine with a round table setting at Chengdu7 in Cary. We have 11 students who are excited to learn more about Chinese culture and education. As part of our trip we will be learning from our Chinese colleagues about Chinese schools as well as teaching lessons at Suzhou North America High School and Beijing Royal School.

The aims of the Study Abroad course are:

  • Immerse NCSU students within Chinese culture and the Chinese educational system in order that they develop an international perspective on learning;
  • Enhance students’ self-awareness and understanding of Chinese culture as well as encourage them to reflect on differences and similarities within their own culture, values, and educational system;
  • Develop skills for relating to cultural differences; stimulate students’ interest in cross-cultural, international, and comparative learning;
  • Create final projects as a result of the learning experiences in China.

We’re eager to learn more about each other as well as make new friends in China. Traveling to another country is always mind expanding. To me, China, with its high context culture, always offers something new. This will be my 15th trip and I’ve only scratched the surface in understanding Chinese culture. We’re so thankful for our partners in Suzhou and Beijing who have helped plan and support this trip. Also, a big shout out to our parent supporters. We have open hearts and minds as we land in Shanghai!
